How to Use Tags to Organize Your Contacts

Tags are labels on your contacts. Use them to sort customers, trigger follow-up, and build email lists.

A tag is a label you stick on a contact. "Past customer." "Roof repair." "sms opt-in." Tags let you sort people, build lists, and kick off follow-up automatically.

Add a tag to one contact

  1. Open the contact in Contacts.
  2. Find the tags area on their record.
  3. Type a tag and press Enter. Pick an existing tag if it shows up, so you don't end up with two spellings.

Add a tag to a bunch of contacts

  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Check the boxes next to the people you want.
  3. Click the Add Tag icon at the top.
  4. Choose one or more tags, then click Add Tags.

To take tags off, select the contacts and use Remove Tags the same way.

Ways local businesses use tags

  • What they bought. "Panel upgrade," "AC tune-up." Great for seasonal emails.
  • How they found you. "Referral," "Google," "Chamber event."
  • Permission. Tag everyone who said yes to texts with sms opt-in. See How to Get Customers to Opt In to Texts.

Tags can start automations

Adding a tag can kick off a follow-up, like a welcome email or a review request. Some of your systems may already be set up this way. Before you add or remove tags in bulk, email support@earnworthy.com if you're not sure what a tag does.

FAQ

How is a tag different from a smart list?

A tag is a label on a contact. A smart list is a saved search that can pull in everyone with that tag. See Smart Lists: Saved Filters That Update Themselves.

Can I add tags when I import a list?

Yes. Add a Tags column to your file. See Preparing and Importing Your Contact List.

I made a typo in a tag. Now what?

Add the right tag to those contacts, then remove the wrong one.
