Opting in just means someone clearly said yes to getting texts from you. It's the single biggest thing that keeps your texting working. Here are three easy ways to get it.
1. Ask by email
Send your list a short note, like: "I'd love to text you updates and invites. Want in? Click here or reply YES." Tag everyone who says yes. That's your text list.
2. Ask on your forms
Add a consent checkbox under the phone number field on your website forms. Leave it unchecked by default. See Website Changes You Need Before Texting Is Approved for exactly how it should look.
3. Ask on calls
When you're on the phone with someone, ask "Can I text you?" A yes on the phone counts. Have your team tag them right after the call.
Your first text after they say yes
Introduce the number and who's behind it, so they save it and know it's you. The intro works alongside the opt-in, not instead of it.
Keep proof
Only text people when you have proof they said yes, like the tag, the form entry, or their YES reply. Use the tag sms opt-in for everyone who says yes, so your text list is always one filter away.
FAQ
My old customers know me. Can I text them?
Knowing you isn't the same as saying yes to texts. Ask them by email first. It takes a day and keeps your number safe.
What happens if I text people who didn't opt in?
More people reply STOP, and the carriers can pause your texting. See Why Your Texting Got Paused.
