Why Carriers Pause Your Texting, and What Switching Providers Does to Your Approval

Why carriers pause business texting, how to get it running again, and what switching texting providers does to your approval.

Your texting approval doesn't belong to your phone number on its own. It's a registration of your business and what you text, filed through one texting provider. Change the provider, and you start that approval over with the new one.

Why carriers pause texting

Carriers pause texting when they see signs of spam. On a small business account, that almost always means one of these:

  1. Too many people replied STOP. Usually after a first bulk text to an old list.
  2. Complaints. People reported the text as spam.
  3. The texts don't match what you registered. You registered for appointment reminders, then sent a promo. Carriers do check after approval.
  4. You hit your daily cap. New accounts start with a low daily limit that grows over time.

The details on opt-outs and daily caps are in Why Your Texting Got Paused.

What to do when it happens

Stop any bulk texts or automations that send texts. Forward any warning email to support@earnworthy.com. Don't try to send from a different number to get around it. Carriers treat that as the same sender, and it makes things worse.

If you want a number removed from your account after a pause, ask us first. Removing a number from your texting registration doesn't clear a pause. The number goes into an "unlinking" state for about a day and can't text. Your business registration stays on file, but the number has to be linked again in Trust Center before it can text.

What switching texting providers does

Every texting provider, like a business phone system, a texting app, or Amplify, files its own registration with the carriers. Your approval with one doesn't move to another.

  • Moving texting into Amplify: We file a new registration in Amplify. Your site needs the pages and checkboxes in Website Changes You Need Before Texting Is Approved. The number has to be in Amplify too, so it has to be ported. A forwarded number can take calls but can't text through Amplify. Registration fees apply again.
  • Moving texting out, or back to an old provider: The new provider has to register you again. Until that's approved, texts from that number may be blocked or filtered. Your old provider's registration doesn't carry over. Ask them to release your number from it so the new registration can go through.
  • Running two providers at once on the same number: Don't. A number can only text through one provider at a time.

After an approval in Amplify, the number shows a green A2P Verified label. Texts from a number without it fail.

Showing a new provider your site

Most providers will ask for your website and where people give consent. Send them the page with the form and checkboxes, plus your Privacy Policy and SMS Terms links. If we built the site, ask us for the links and we'll send them over.

Before you switch

Email us first. Switching mid-campaign can leave you with no texting for a while, because a new approval can take days to weeks. We'll tell you what you'd lose and how long it'll take.
