Why Your Texting Got Paused: Opt-Outs and Daily Limits

Texting pauses come from carrier rules on opt-out rates and daily sending caps. Here's what triggers them and how to avoid them.

If texting on your account got a warning or a pause, it's almost always one of two things. Too many people replied STOP, or you hit your daily sending cap. Neither one is an Earnworthy rule. The phone carriers set them, and every business that texts plays by them, us included.

Opt-out rates

When someone replies STOP, that's an opt-out. The carriers watch the share of people opting out.

  • Normal is around 1%.
  • Carriers start flagging anything over 2%.
  • Go well past that, and you can get a warning and then a pause on texting, sometimes on the same day.

A pause lifts after about a day. Your emails aren't affected. Repeat problems escalate, though, and can get texting shut off on the account for good.

Daily sending caps

New texting accounts have a daily cap that grows in levels. It starts at 100 messages a day, then 250, 500, 750, and on up to 3,000 and beyond. When you send your full daily limit, texting pauses for 24 hours, then the next level opens on its own.

When we set up a texting campaign, we keep the daily batches under your current cap so nothing gets cut off mid-send.

How to keep texting healthy

  1. Only text people who said yes. A high opt-out rate means the list has people who never asked to hear from you. See How to Get Customers to Opt In to Texts.
  2. Say who you are in the first line. "Hi Sam, it's Pat with Smith Roofing." Once people see your name, an unfamiliar number stops mattering.
  3. Keep it plain. Words like "VIP" and "elite" and a string of emojis read as promotional. One emoji per message is plenty.
  4. Use email for cold or older lists. Email has a lot more leeway.

FAQ

Would I avoid this by texting from my own phone?

No. The same rules apply on any number, and carriers track the same message going out over and over.

Yes. Email support@earnworthy.com and we'll look it over with you.

I got a warning. What should I do right now?

Stop or pause the campaign, pull anyone who hasn't opted in, and email us. We'll help you fix the list before the next send.
