Texting After You're Approved: Consent, Complaints, and Carrier Pauses

Approved to text? Here's how to handle consent for your existing list, verification problems, complaints, and carrier pauses.

Getting approved is step one. Staying approved comes down to who you text and how they react. Here's what to know once your registration clears.

Texting your existing customer list

Approval doesn't give you permission to text everyone already in your account. You can only text people who clearly agreed to hear from you by text. A phone number on an old invoice isn't consent.

If you want to text your existing list, ask them by email first. Tag everyone who says yes with sms opt-in, and that's your text list. More ways to collect it are in How to Get Customers to Opt In to Texts.

A phone number failed verification

During registration, carriers send a one-time code to a mobile phone. That code needs a direct line on AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Plans that run on another carrier's network, like Xfinity Mobile, often fail. Use a different direct-carrier phone, even a family member's, and tell us so we can resend it. The number has to be a real mobile number. Internet phone numbers, including a LeadConnector number, don't count.

When customers complain

Complaints are what get texting paused, so keep them low with a few habits:

  • Only text people who opted in
  • Say who you are in the first message
  • Don't text late at night. Automated texts can be held to a sending window, like weekdays during business hours, so nothing goes out at 2 AM. Ask us to set one up.
  • Honor every opt-out right away
