Setting Up Google Workspace Email on Your Domain

Want you@yourbusiness.com in Gmail? Here's how Google Workspace email fits with Amplify, and the DNS steps Google asks for.

Google Workspace gives you Gmail at your own domain, like you@yourbusiness.com. It works alongside Amplify without any trouble. The key is knowing which domain does what. Start with Which Domain Is for What if you haven't read it.

How it fits with Amplify

  • Your Workspace inbox runs on your main domain, like yourbusiness.com.
  • Amplify emails come from the address you choose on your domain, and they're delivered through a separate sending setup.

Because the delivery setup is separate, setting up one doesn't break the other.

The steps Google asks for

  1. Sign up for Google Workspace with your domain.
  2. Verify you own the domain. Google gives you a record to add in your DNS settings, wherever your domain is managed.
  3. Add Google's MX record. This is what sends your email to Gmail. Google's current setup is one MX record: host @ (or blank), priority 1, value smtp.google.com.
  4. Turn on Gmail in your Google Admin console once the record is in.

DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to kick in, so don't panic if mail doesn't flow right away.

Don't touch these

  • Don't change or delete the records Amplify uses on your mail subdomain.
  • Don't remove your Google MX records later while working on your website or Amplify setup. Remove those, and your inbox stops getting mail.

FAQ

I already have the old Google MX records. Do I need to change them?

No. Older setups use a set of ASPMX records, and those keep working.

Will this affect my website?

No. MX records only handle email.

Can Amplify emails come from my Workspace address?

Yes. Your emails can come from any address you choose on your domain, including your Workspace address. See What Address Your Emails Come From.
